Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I decide which Sew Easy Guide is right for me?

The 6.25" Sew Easy Guide is the easiest to use while you learn how to use the guide. It will sew diagonally across squares with sides up to 4" long. The 11.25" Sew Easy Guide 2 will sew diagonally across squares with sides up to 7.5" long, but otherwise they both do the same tasks. The shorter guide is easier to start with.

What is the best presser foot to use with the Sew Easy Guide?

The multi-purpose foot works well because it has a 'large' flat surface area on its underneath side, which gives the Sew Easy Guide's adhesive lots of area to hold on to. However, a transparent open-toe presser foot, available from your sewing machine accessory dealer or online, provides a larger viewing area around the foot itself, which is very nice to have, especially when sewing half-square triangles.

What won't work is any presser foot with an uneven surface area on its underneath side. Walking feet/even feed feet are not suitable, either, due to their lack of surface area for the guide to adhere to. However, if the sewing machine has a built-in even-feed mechanism (such as some Pfaffs), a notch can be cut out of the back of the Sew Easy Guide to allow clearance for the even-feed 'arm' (or, the even-feed can be disengaged).

How to increase the longevity of the Sew Easy Guide's adhesive

All adhesives are adversely affected by wear and tear and/or lint and dust build up. Therefore, the adhesive will last longer if excess wear and tear and lint are avoided/minimized. To help the adhesive last longer, minimize the number of times you install and uninstall the guide from your presser foot. Whenever the guide is not on the presser foot, protect the adhesive area from dust with the little brown tab that comes with the guide.

Best of all would be to dedicate one presser foot to be the Sew Easy Guide Presser Foot, and keep the guide on that foot at all times, never removing it. This also saves time, not having to install the Sew Easy Guide every time you want to use it. Having an extra foot (so that you have one foot with the guide and the same type foot without the guide) is what many people do, since an extra multi-purpose foot or an extra open-toe foot is a minimal expense.

What if the Sew Easy Guide's adhesive gets worn out?

Make sure all the old adhesive residue is removed (using Goo Gone or other adhesive remover). Gently clean the adhesive area of the guide with isopropyl alcohol and let dry. Then apply Scotch brand double stick permanent tape to the area where the Sew Easy Guide attaches to the presser foot (don't worry, the permanent tape will still release from the presser foot). With an X-acto type knife, carefully cut out the guide's oval needle hole (or, when you are applying tape, avoid taping over the hole). See also above for 'How to increase the longevity of the Sew Easy Guide's adhesive'. Truthfully, it may be less expensive to buy a new guide, unless you already have the above supplies.

Can I shorten the Sew Easy Guide?

Yes. If the guide feels like it is too long for your particular project and is making things awkward, the guide can be easily shortened. Simply cut the guide to your desired length, and use the guide's original rounded end to trace and cut a new rounded end. Do not cut off the needle hole end of the guide. Shortening a guide should be considered a permanent step.

Will the Sew Easy Guide Tutorial CD work on my DVD player?

Maybe. Some DVD players will play CDs, some won't -- check your DVD manual. The tutorial CDs are being phased out, but they are the same as the tutorials on the website and/or YouTube.
